1. TITLE

Why Work Done by Friction is Negative: The silly mistake that costs 4 marks

2. THE MISTAKE STATEMENT

THE COMMON MISTAKE:
Most students think: "Work is a scalar quantity, so it must always be positive, just like mass or kinetic energy" or they simply calculate it as $W = F \times d$, completely ignoring the vector nature of force and displacement.

3. WHY THIS MISTAKE HAPPENS

  • What's the source of confusion? Students often forget that work is the mathematical result of the scalar product (dot product) of the force and displacement vectors. Because "work" in everyday life usually implies effort (which feels positive), students assume the mathematical value must also be positive.
  • What similar-sounding concept causes this? Kinetic energy is also a scalar with the same units (Joules) and is always positive. Students confuse the properties of kinetic energy with the properties of work.
  • How do coaching centers sometimes teach this wrong? They introduce the basic formula $W = F \times d$ too early without emphasizing the crucial $\cos \theta$ component, leading students to mechanically multiply magnitudes and skip checking the direction.

4. THE CORRECT UNDERSTANDING

THE TRUTH:
Work is indeed a scalar quantity, but unlike mass or kinetic energy, it can be positive, negative, or zero. Its sign depends entirely on the angle ($\theta$) between the force vector ($\mathbf{F}$) and the displacement vector ($\mathbf{d}$).

Positive Work is: Work done when the angle $\theta$ between force and displacement is acute ($0^{\circ} \le \theta < 90^{\circ}$). The force is helping the motion.
Negative Work is: Work done when the angle $\theta$ is obtuse ($90^{\circ} < \theta \le 180^{\circ}$). The force opposes the displacement.

Key difference: Because friction always acts opposite to the direction of motion, the angle between frictional force and displacement is exactly $180^{\circ}$. Since $\cos 180^{\circ} = -1$, the work done by friction is inherently negative.

5. COMPARISON TABLE

Aspect Positive Work Negative Work
Definition Force helps or assists the displacement. Force opposes or resists the displacement.
Angle ($\theta$) $0^{\circ} \le \theta < 90^{\circ}$ (Acute angle) $90^{\circ} < \theta \le 180^{\circ}$ (Obtuse angle)
Formula $W = F d \cos \theta$ (Result is $> 0$) $W = F d \cos \theta$ (Result is $< 0$)
Kinetic Energy Tends to increase the kinetic energy of the object. Tends to decrease the kinetic energy of the object.
When to use Pushing a cart forward, a horse pulling a carriage. Friction slowing down a cycle, air resistance, catching a ball.
NEET asks about The sign of work done by an applied pushing force. The sign of work done by retarding forces like friction or gravity on a rising object.

6. MCQ (Tests the exact confusion point)

A cyclist comes to a skidding stop over a distance of $10\text{ m}$. If the frictional force on the cycle due to the road is $200\text{ N}$ and directly opposes the motion, what is the work done by the road on the cycle?

(a) $2000\text{ J}$
(b) $0\text{ J}$
(c) $-200\text{ J}$
(d) $-2000\text{ J}$

7. ANSWER + WHY THE TRAP WORKS

Correct: (d)

"If you chose (a), you made the classic mistake of blindly multiplying force and distance ($200 \times 10$) without considering the angle."
"The question specifically asked about the work done by the road (which applies frictional force) on the cycle. Since friction opposes displacement, the angle $\theta$ is $180^{\circ}$. Therefore, $W = F d \cos 180^{\circ} = 200 \times 10 \times (-1) = -2000\text{ J}$."

8. THE TRICK TO NEVER FORGET

MEMORY TRICK:
"Force that HELPS = Happy (+), Force that FIGHTS = Negative (-)"
Whenever a force is fighting against the direction the object wants to go (like friction or air resistance), it's doing a negative job. Always write out $W = Fd \cos \theta$ instead of just $W = Fd$ to force your brain to look for the angle!

9. RAPID FIRE — Test Yourself

Quick check — Which one?

  1. You are pushing a heavy cart horizontally across the floor. Work done by your applied force? → Positive or Negative?
  2. You are carrying a heavy box upwards. Work done by the gravitational force on the box? → Positive or Negative?
  3. A block slides down a rough inclined plane. Work done by kinetic friction? → Positive or Negative?

Answers: 1-[Positive (Force and displacement are in the same direction)], 2-[Negative (Gravity pulls down, box goes up, $\theta=180^\circ$)], 3-[Negative (Friction acts up the incline, block slides down, $\theta=180^\circ$)].
